Summer is over, but luckily autumn with all its colorful leaves is upon us! We will show you 10 shrubs that impress with colorful autumn leaves, so you can optimally adapt your garden to the different seasons. There are plants suitable even for your rather small garden!
1. Red maple (Acer ginnala)
The red maple can grow as a shrub or as a small tree and shows its maximum splendor only in autumn. The small fragrant flowers in spring are also beautiful and much appreciated by insects, but in autumn the leaves turn from bright green to orange to deep red. This charming color palette truly brings the feeling of an «Indian summer» to your garden. The red maple prefers a sunny or partially shaded location with permeable soil. It is also a drought-resistant and easy-care shrub and will find its place in your small garden too.

2. Copper rock pear (Amelanchier lamarckii)
The copper wild pear is a versatile shrub or small tree that initially delights with delicate white flowers in spring and then displays spectacular autumn colors in autumn. Their leaves then glow in warm red and copper tones, giving the garden a warm and inviting feel. And before that, in summer there are small cherry-like fruits that are even edible – and birds like them too! The copper wild pear thrives best in sunny or partially shaded locations with well-drained soil and is considered hardy and easy to care for.

3. Columnar cherry ‘Amanogawa’ (Prunus serrulata ‘Amanogawa’)
This elegant ornamental cherry impresses not only in spring with its lush, delicate pink flowers, but also in autumn with its bright autumn colors. The leaves of this variety change from deep green to warm yellow, adding a special accent of color to your garden. True to its name, it grows in a columnar shape and is therefore perfect for small gardens! The columnar cherry tree prefers sunny positions with well-drained soil.
4. Zaubernuss (Hamamel)
Witch hazel is a special and noble shrub that impresses in autumn with the brilliant color of its leaves: the color palette ranges from yellow to orange to bright red. The fragrant, yellow, thread-like flowers, which can appear very early in January, are also a garden highlight, especially at a time when the garden often looks rather sad. They also make witch hazel a real pasture for bees! Witch hazel feels most comfortable in a sunny or partially shaded location with slightly acidic soil and does not like dryness or waterlogging. But your sprawling foliage needs space in the garden!

5. Amberbaum (Liquidambar styraciflua)
The sweetgum tree is known for its spectacular and long-lasting fall color, which ranges from bright yellow to orange to deep red. Its star-shaped lobed leaves give it an imposing appearance and make it a stunning, elegant eye-catcher in the garden! Since it can get quite large, it requires some space. Prefers sunny or partially shaded positions with fertile, well-drained soil.

6. Red maple (Acer palmatum Atropurpureum)
The red Japanese maple is also a special color accent in your garden! Its leaves, with the characteristic maple shape, are striking for their dark red color and turn further in autumn from bright red to orange to pale yellow. The filigree leaves and the compact, bushy habit make the red maple a popular choice for various gardens: in a small garden it finds space in the flower bed, but also as a container plant it brings a spectacular color accent to your garden. Japanese red maple prefers partially shaded locations with well-drained, moist soil.

7. Red Wig Bush (Cotinus coggygria Royal Purple)
Even in autumn the red wig bush impresses with the brilliant coloring of its leaves. The leaves, already intense red in color, then turn from orange to warm yellow. Before summer, the airy inflorescences make this shrub a real exotic eye-catcher in the garden. The red wig bush needs a sunny location with well-drained soil and tolerates drought well.

8. Cornelica (Cornus Mass)
Even in autumn the dogwood impresses with the magnificent color of its leaves, which ranges from bright yellow to orange to warm red. Their numerous small yellow flowers in early spring are another highlight of the gardening year – and for bees, who find the flowers an important source of food after the winter. In summer, cornelian cherries, edible and healthy, are another gem! The dogwood prefers sunny or semi-shaded positions with well-drained soil and is considered undemanding and very winter-hardy. You can find detailed information about carnelian here.

9. Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa)
The chokeberry surprises in autumn with the brilliant color of its leaves, which ranges from intense dark green to yellow to intense red. Their dark purple berries are not only attractive, but also very healthy and are known as aronia berries as a superfood. And if you don’t like them, they are a valuable source of food for birds. Chokeberry prefers sunny or partially shaded locations with cool, well-drained soil. You can also plant them wonderfully in a bucket or pot on the terrace or balcony and add a little touch of color.

10. Roter Hartriegel «Midwinter Fire» (Cornus sanguinea Midwinter Fire)
The red dogwood ‘Midwinter Fire’ shows a brilliant coloring of its branches in autumn, ranging from deep orange to yellow to deep red, and the leaves also become colorful, so that the entire shrub actually represents a show of color in your garden in autumn and winter – especially in the cold and otherwise rather arid garden season. The red dogwood prefers sunny or partially shaded positions with well-drained soil and can tolerate even temporary drought well.

With these shrubs you can easily bring the «Indian summer» into your garden and ensure that your garden still has beautiful color accents even in autumn. Which one suits your garden best?
