According to a ZDH survey from April 2020, more than half of the craft companies interviewed want to hire the same number of apprentices as before the pandemic, despite the coronavirus, and some even more. However, many companies have no candidates. We have summarized for you the most important tips that will help you attract the attention of potential candidates.
1. Company website: without it it is no longer possible
Nowadays, when almost all areas of life are permeated by digitalization, a well-prepared company website is essential. For most people, especially younger people, surfing the web is a natural part of everyday life. However, many craft businesses still have outdated websites and a small number even have none at all. Almost everyone nowadays searches for job adverts online first. If you want to successfully find interns and skilled workers, you should have at least one current listing on Google My Business. A company website is better, but a career website or job posting subsection within your online presence is even better.
Candidates should find clear information about your company and the training position advertised on your website. It is also important at this time to relieve applicants of any uncertainty regarding the coronavirus pandemic. Clarify how the application, onboarding and vocational school currently work in compliance with hygiene regulations.
2. Social media: Reach out to your target group wherever they are
Social media marketing aims to attract attention. The goal is for potential candidates to reach the company’s website via their social media profiles. Therefore, a good company website is the basis for successful recruitment.
When looking for interns, focus on platforms where young people are predominantly present. At the moment it’s mainly Instagram and TikTok. You don’t have to (and can’t) be active on every social media platform. In 2021, especially short videos will be in fashion. We recommend using your interns when it comes to social media. They speak the same language as potential candidates, know what happens on the platforms and are also familiar with the technical know-how. Have your apprentices make videos in which, for example, they take a short tour of the laboratory, interview the training manager or tell something about training in your company. There are no limits to creativity here.
3. Offer a WhatsApp contact
More and more companies are offering WhatsApp as a modern contact option for their employees or for customers and candidates. Particularly interesting when looking for apprentices is the messaging service, as young people use their smartphones every day and more than 90% of young people communicate via WhatsApp. This makes contact via WhatsApp particularly simple and requires little effort. It is also possible to arrange a WhatsApp consultation time. To do this, you can set specific times when contact people will be available to discuss training-related matters.
4. Offer digital job interviews
In Corona times, the entire application process works a little differently. Many applicants are unsure and wonder how they can still proceed with their application. Be transparent and describe what your job interview will be like in the job ad. Interviews are possible on the telephone or via video conference.
Popular online tools for video chatting include Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Jitsi, Zoom, Skype and Whatsapp. If you want to offer a job interview via video chat, you should familiarize yourself with the corresponding tool before the first interview and check whether everything works. It often feels a little strange the first time, but over time you’ll get into the routine.
5. Highlight attractiveness: the benefits of keywords
When looking for employees and trainees, highlighting the attractiveness of your company becomes increasingly important. What sets you apart from other training companies? What can you offer future apprentices? Why should candidates complete their training with you?
The so-called benefits (employee benefits) can be of various kinds. For example, you can offer future apprentices technical equipment (laptops, smartphones) that can also be used privately beyond work. The support/continuing training areas (continuing training, exam preparation in the company) as well as the planning of free time and breaks (relaxation room, sports activities, table football/ping pong, excursions, apprenticeship days, etc.) are also highly appreciated by apprentices.
You can also offer discounts in the catering sector (canteen, free fruit/drinks) or mobility (work ticket, travel allowance, work bike, company car). Flexible working hours and financial incentives such as Christmas or holidays can also be decisive for choosing your company.
