A small garden doesn’t necessarily mean missing out on the beauty of flowering shrubs! In contrast, there are a variety of shrubs that are perfect for limited spaces due to their small size and/or compact growth habit and at the same time produce large flowers and therefore add a beautiful accent of color to your garden design. These shrubs are also ideal for a smaller front garden or a narrow flower bed in the house or driveway.
Here are our favorite rather small shrubs:
1. Forsythie Minigold (Forsythia x intermedia ‘Minigold’)
This compact type of forsythia offers the same benefits as its bigger sister, but remains small with a maximum height of around 1.2 m. It is considered the last harbinger of spring when the many small yellow flowers appear at the beginning of the year. Their upright growth and lush flowers make them a real eye-catcher. It is considered very easy to care for and undemanding, making it perfect for any garden beginner or gardener with little time.

The easy-care fragrant dwarf lilac is an ideal choice for small gardens because it grows compact and upright and reaches a maximum height of 1.5 m. The flowers appear in early summer and there is often a second bloom in late summer as well. Not only do they add a pleasant scent to the garden, but they also attract bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects to your garden. The fragrant dwarf lilac is also very suitable as a container plant if you want to beautify your terrace, balcony or house entrance. It loves sun or partial shade and tolerates heat well.

Weigela variegata is known not only for its attractive pink flowers in spring, but also for its attractive foliage. The leaves are bicolored and change color depending on the season: from yellow in spring to green with reddish accents in summer. This shrub is definitely a colorful highlight in the garden and can also be used as part of a flowering hedge. With a height of around 1.5 metres, the variegated Weigela fits perfectly into small gardens.

4. Bartblume (Caryopteris x clandonensis)
The bearded flower is an attractive and easy-care plant, also ideal for small gardens thanks to its compact growth. The blue flowers that appear in late summer are a real eye-catcher. It also attracts bees and butterflies to the garden and creates a lively atmosphere. It reaches a maximum height of approximately 1 m.

The Woodbridge Hibiscus is a charming shrub that delights in late summer with its large pink flowers (10-15 cm in diameter!). Its upright growth and maximum height of around 2 meters make it an ideal choice for small gardens and front gardens. The Woodbridge Hibiscus loves sun and therefore prefers full sun positions and well-drained soil.

6. Butterfly lilac (Buddleja davidii)
The butterfly lilac is also a popular choice for small gardens, as it creates a colorful and lively atmosphere with its upright growth and fragrant floral umbrellas. Its purple, white or pink flowers appear in summer and attract butterflies and bees. The butterfly lilac reaches a maximum height of about 2 meters and tolerates heat and drought well.

These shrubs are not only attractive, but also easy to care for and undemanding, so you can have a garden or front yard full of flowers in spring and summer without much additional effort.
