The Federal Court of Justice has ruled: bamboo can legally be considered a hedge. In the case in question it was a bamboo hedge well over three meters high: the neighbor felt disturbed and was of the opinion that the bamboo, more than three meters high, by law was no longer a hedge, but a tree. The BGH has ruled: If the legally prescribed limit distance is respected (usually 50-75 cm, depending on state law), there is no general height limit for a hedge – not even for bamboo. And so now we have it in black and white: yes, even bamboo counts as a coverif it is planted densely and provides privacy, it doesn’t matter how large it grows.
For anyone who is thinking of using bamboo to create privacy in the garden, the verdict is exciting – and a good reason to take a closer look at the bamboo variant.
1. Why bamboo is so popular as a hedge
Bamboo is more than exotic: it is evergreengrows fast and tight and creates a calm and natural atmosphere in the garden. No other tree brings so much Asian lightness to the garden and at the same time such effective privacy protection all year round. Bamboo has therefore rightly established itself as a classic in the modern garden with an elegant look.
But: Not all bamboo is suitable for the garden. To whom varieties forming runners attacks and does not create a rhizome barrier The root has extended beyond the property – and therefore a dispute with the neighbor.
The good news: there are also easy-to-maintain ones, lump formation Varieties that stay in place. For example:
2. Our favorite: Fargesia murieliae ‘Jumbo’
Fargesia ‘Jumbo’ is the perfect bamboo for those seeking privacy, without root drama. It’s growing lump formationAlso compact and controlledwithout forming runners – and therefore also needs no rhizome barrier. This makes it an ideal choice for home gardens, townhouse borders or urban gardens; You can also ideally plant it as a solitary plant, for example to create a privacy screen in the front garden.
Height and growth width:
- Height: approx. 3-4 meters
- Length: approx. 1 to 1.5 meters
- This makes “Jumbo” an excellent comparative option narrow, upright and tall hedge.
Other advantages:
- Evergreen and resistant
- Elegant, fine foliage in fresh green
- Easy to maintain and compatible with cutting
- Perfect for pots, flower beds and hedge plantings
3. Planting and care – so it’s stress-free
To ensure that your bamboo grows optimally and that you can enjoy dense vegetation for a long time, it is best to pay attention to these tips:
Position:
- Sunny to partially shaded
- Loose soil, rich in humus, without water stagnation
Planting distance:
- For hedges: approx. 60-80cm
- In the bucket: large pot with good drainage
Deposit:
- Water regularly in the first few weeks after planting
- Only water later if it stays dry for a long time.
Fertilization:
- In spring with compost or special bamboo fertilizer
- Do not fertilize in autumn, otherwise it will germinate too late.
Cut:
- Not mandatory, but possible in spring, if necessary, some compost or bamboo fertilizer.
- It is best to remove old stems close to the ground for dense new growth
Winter:
- In bed: absolutely resistant
- In the bucket: protect the pot from frost (e.g. with a fleece) and do not let the soil dry out
4. What garden styles is bamboo suitable for?
Fargesia ‘Jumbo’ can be used in many ways:
- Modern garden: clear lines, privacy protection all year round
- Natural garden: combined with trees or wild herbs (in this article we have collected inspiration for garden design with ornamental grasses)
- Asian Garden: with maple, fern and gravel
- Urban courtyard: as a space-saving and elegant boundary and privacy screen. Conclusion: bamboo is (also) a simple hedge
5. Conclusion
The BGH ruling shows: Bamboo can also be a legally relevant hedge. And if it grows as wonderfully as it does Fargesia ‘Jumbo’it’s a good thing. Because with him you get Privacy protection without rhizome barrierwithout problems, but with style, structure and natural elegance. 🙂
